Selection Guide
Picking the right prebiotic fiber
GOS, FOS, IMO and resistant dextrin all carry fiber and prebiotic stories — but they differ by source, sweetness, tolerance and where they perform. This guide is the short version of that decision.
The four-way comparison
| Source | Content | Sweetness | Best for | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GOS | Lactose | ≥57% on solids | Mild | Infant formula, gut-health dairy, supplements |
| FOS | Corn / chicory | ≥95% on solids | Mild-moderate | Fiber fortification in yogurt, bars, beverages |
| IMO | Corn starch | ≥90% on solids | Mild | Protein bars, syrups, low-sugar drinks |
| Resistant dextrin | Corn starch | ≥85% TDF | Neutral | Low-viscosity fiber in drinks, bakery, light foods |
Content measured on solids; AOAC/HPLC methods per COA.
How to decide in three questions
Is the product for infants or young children?
Go GOS. It is the prebiotic structurally closest to human milk and carries the regulatory history in infant formula.
Do you need fiber plus a touch of sweetness?
FOS or IMO. FOS for broad fortification; IMO when the product is a bar or syrup that needs binding.
Do you need fiber that never changes mouthfeel?
Resistant dextrin. Low viscosity and clean taste make it the choice for clear drinks and light bakery.
