GOS vs FOS: the two prebiotics in infant formula
Most infant formulas list both — GOS and FOS — and they are not interchangeable. The difference starts at the source molecule and shows up in how each feeds an infant's gut.

Why GOS is the lead, and the 9:1 blend
GOS is built from lactose, so its galactose-based structure resembles the oligosaccharides naturally present in human milk. That structural similarity is the whole argument — it selectively feeds the bifidobacteria that dominate a breastfed infant's gut.
FOS brings shorter fructose chains that ferment a little faster and add the short-chain activity GOS does not fully cover. Most formulas therefore blend them at roughly 9 parts GOS to 1 part FOS, echoing the balance found in human milk — GOS carries the load, FOS fills the gap.
Regulatory and labeling
GOS is permitted for infant formula in Australia and New Zealand, carries FOSHU status in Japan, and holds GRAS recognition in the US. In China it is approved as a novel food ingredient and nutrient fortifier.
